Lucy could feel someone coming up behind her as she waited outside the venue for her parents’ wedding.
The enormous dog nearly didn’t recognize the woman in the white dress as she turned around. But Lucy couldn’t stop herself from leaping over when she learned who it was.
“It was like she hesitated and thought, ‘Oh my gosh, is that my MOM?’ before the enthusiasm kicked in and she raced to me,” Lucy’s mother, Ashley Pfaff, explained in an interview.
When Pfaff and her now-husband, Chris Decker, began planning their wedding, they knew they wanted Lucy to be a part of it.
“We realized that bringing Lucy to our wedding would add another layer of planning to our day, but after talking about it, we agreed that she had been here with us the whole time and deserved to be there,” Pfaff said. “Because we didn’t have any children during our wedding, Lucy served as our flower girl!”
Lucy took her role as flower pup very seriously, and she was overjoyed to be a part of the celebrations. She even went out of her way to make the wedding memorable.
Pfaff continued and said: “Probably even more special than the first look was the fact that as soon as we started saying our vows to each other, Lucy, completely unsolicited, got up and came right between us at the altar. It was as if she knew that this was the most important part of the whole day and joined us all together for it!”
Pfaff and Decker are both doctors, and they can’t picture their life without Lucy to provide them much-needed joy and affection. The pair took peace in knowing they would always come home to Lucy while working on the front lines through the toughest phases of the pandemic.
“Every single day, Lucy was such a rock of unconditional love and joy, even when you couldn’t see any other relatives or friends,” Pfaff said. “She was a big part of how we both got through some of the worst moments as healthcare practitioners.”
Though adding Lucy in their wedding required some additional paperwork, Pfaff wouldn’t have had it any other way.
Pfaff finally had this to say: “Having her get to be part of this special day and special moment in my dress was something I wouldn’t have changed for the world. She is a once-in-a-lifetime dog.”
