Our dog Abbey, 14, died last month. The day after her death, Meredith, my daughter who is just four years old, was crying and telling how much she missed Abbey.
She asked if we could write a letter to God so that when Abbey comes to heaven, God recognizes her. I told her that I thought we could, so she put together these words in her letter to god;
Dear God,
Will you please take care of my dog? She died yesterday and is with you in heaven. I miss her very much. I am happy that you let me have her as my dog even though she got sick.
I hope you will play with her. She likes to swim and play with balls. I am sending a picture of her so when you see her you will know that she is my dog. I really miss her.

We put the letter in an envelope with an image of Abbey and Meredith and addressed it to God / Heaven. We put our return address on it. Then Meredith stuck several seals on the front of the envelope, because she said it would take a lot to get the letter to heaven.
That afternoon, he left it in the mailbox of our post office in Williamsport, Pennsylvania. A few days later, she asked if God had already received the letter. I told him that I thought he did received it.
Yesterday, there was a package wrapped in gold paper on our portico directed, “To Meredith” in an unknown handwriting. Meredith opened it. Inside was a book by Mr. Rogers entitled “When a pet dies”. The letter we wrote to God in his open envelope was attached to the inside cover. On the opposite page were Abbey and Meredith and this note:
Dear Meredith,
Abbey came to heaven safely. Having the photo was a big help and I recognized her immediately.
Abbey is no longer sick. Her spirit is here with me as if she were in your heart. Abbey loved being your dog. Since we do not need our bodies in the sky, I do not have pockets to store your photo, so I send it to you in this little book so you can keep it and keep something to remind you of ‘Abbey.
Thank you for this beautiful letter and thank your mother for helping you write it and send it to me. What a wonderful mother you have. I chose her especially for you. I send my blessings every day and I remember that I love you very much. By the way, I am easy to find. I am everywhere where there is love.
