Inside an Apartment Block Housing Over 20,000 Residents in a Dystopian World

Inside a Massive Apartment Block Housing Over 20,000 Residents in a Dystopian-Like Setting

A viral TikTok video has captured the world’s attention by showcasing a colossal apartment complex in China, often referred to as the “Dystopian Apartment.” The video, shared by @fatheristheone, used a drone to reveal the vastness of the building, which can accommodate up to 30,000 residents. The video highlights the building’s unique design and immense scale, leaving viewers both stunned and intrigued.

While dystopian societies are usually depicted in novels, where people live in fear or under oppressive conditions, this real-world structure in China has drawn comparisons due to its sheer size and density. The Regent International apartment, located in Qianjiang Century City, Hangzhou, was designed by Alicia Loo, the same architect behind the iconic Singapore Sands Hotel. Completed in 2013, this massive S-shaped building stands at 675 feet tall and is home to around 20,000 people.

The Features of the “Dystopian Apartment”

Regent International spans between 36 and 39 floors, depending on the side of the building, and is one of the most densely populated residential areas in the world. It’s equipped with all the necessities for daily life, offering everything from restaurants, pools, and nail salons to grocery stores and internet cafés. Essentially, residents can find everything they need within the building, raising questions about how often people actually leave their homes.

Despite its dystopian moniker, life inside the Regent International isn’t as bleak as one might expect. Most residents are young professionals, college students, or influencers who appreciate the building’s convenience and cost-effectiveness. Rent for units ranges from 1,500 RMB (around $200) to 4,000 RMB (just under $600) per month, making it an affordable option for many.

Benefits of Living in Regent International

For those who live here, the primary appeal is the convenience of having all amenities under one roof. From food and entertainment to daily essentials, the apartment complex provides a one-stop solution for urban living. Additionally, its affordability makes it an attractive option for those looking to save on housing costs.

However, while some hail the design as innovative and efficient, others express concerns about the long-term impact of living in such a dense environment. Critics worry about the lack of personal space, fresh air, and outdoor experiences. Nonetheless, larger units in the complex come with balconies, providing some relief from these potential downsides.

A Possible Solution to the Housing Crisis?

As housing shortages continue to be a global issue, some see the Regent International model as a potential solution to increasing housing density without taking up additional land. Similar concepts have already been explored elsewhere, such as in Whittier, Alaska, where a 14-story building houses all 272 residents of the city, offering a range of amenities including a school, post office, and police station.

The Drawbacks of High-Density Living

While the convenience and affordability of living in a complex like Regent International are clear, some worry about the downsides. In cultures where privacy and outdoor space are highly valued, such as in the U.S., the idea of living in such close proximity to thousands of others may seem undesirable. Many Americans enjoy having a backyard or space to relax outdoors, which is something that would be limited in such a densely populated building.

However, some of these concerns could be mitigated by opting for larger units or making use of balconies to create a more spacious and airy living environment.
