The relationship between Johnny Depp and his ex-wife Amber Heard was highly tumultuous.
After numerous allegations of abuse, the two were embroiled in a high-profile court battle that exposed many private details to the public.
They met on the set of “The Rum Diary” in 2011 and started dating shortly after Depp ended his long-term relationship with Vanessa Paradis.
Depp and Heard got engaged in 2014 and married a year later. However, just months into their marriage, Depp reportedly sustained a hand injury during a heated argument involving “smashing bottles and windows.”
Heard filed for divorce, citing “irreconcilable differences.”
In an op-ed for The Washington Post, Heard spoke about domestic abuse. Though she did not mention Depp by name, it was implied that she was referring to him.
“Two years ago, I became a public figure representing domestic abuse, and I felt the full force of our culture’s wrath for women who speak out,” she wrote, receiving widespread support.
Depp denied all allegations, but the damage to his career was significant. Directors became reluctant to cast him, and his role in the sequel to J.K. Rowling’s “Fantastic Beasts,” “The Crimes of Grindelwald,” faced heavy criticism. In 2018, he was dropped from his iconic role as Captain Jack Sparrow.
In response, Depp filed a $50-million defamation lawsuit against Heard, claiming he was the victim of domestic abuse.
“The op-ed [Heard’s article] depended on the central premise that Ms. Heard was a domestic abuse victim and that Mr. Depp perpetrated domestic violence against her,” his lawsuit stated.
“She hit, punched, and kicked me. She also repeatedly and frequently threw objects into my body and head, including heavy bottles, soda cans, burning candles, television remote controls, and paint thinner cans, which severely injured me.”
