When Suzanne Gibbons, founder of Animal Haven sanctuary in Ireland, learned that a donkey was trapped in rising floodwaters, she wasted no time springing into action. A storm had broken the gate of the donkey’s enclosure, causing it to wander off and get caught in rapidly rising waters.
The donkey’s owner immediately contacted Gibbons, explaining the dire situation and asking for help. Knowing time was of the essence, Gibbons took to Facebook, appealing for assistance. She requested a boat, some strong individuals, and a rope to attempt the rescue.
Thankfully, her call for help was quickly answered by the local community. People offered the necessary supplies and manpower to carry out the mission.
Initially, Gibbons struggled to find anyone brave enough to join her in the dangerous floodwaters. She told BuzzFeed News, “At first, I couldn’t find anybody willing to help me go in because the river was flooding really badly.” However, Mike Fleming, a member of the Killorglin Rowing Club, soon stepped forward, not only offering his help but also providing a boat essential to the rescue.
The operation was tense and delicate. Equipped with life preservers and ropes, Gibbons and her team carefully worked to secure the frightened but cooperative donkey. They placed a life preserver around the donkey’s neck, attached a rope, and slowly guided him to safety.
The dramatic rescue was captured on video, showcasing the courage and compassion of the rescuers.
Gibbons couldn’t praise Mike Fleming and another helper, Declan, enough. Speaking to thejournal.ie, she said, “Never say something can’t be done, just do it. Declan and Mike were beyond brave. So many people told me, ‘Don’t do it, it can’t be done, you can’t swim, you’ll get killed.’ These two men just said, ‘Okay girl, let’s give it a go.’”
Once safely on dry land, the sense of relief was palpable, but the happiest of all was undoubtedly the donkey. Named Mike after his rescuer, the donkey flashed a wide, grateful grin, as if saying “thank you.”
That infectious smile quickly went viral, winning hearts around the world.
After the rescue, Mike the donkey received careful attention at the sanctuary. He was dried off, fed a hearty meal, and given antibiotics to prevent any post-rescue health issues. A vet examined him for signs of pneumonia, and he was kept warm under a heat lamp for added comfort. Fortunately, Mike made a swift recovery.
Mike’s now-famous smile not only marked the end of his ordeal but also expressed his gratitude in a way words couldn’t. It was his way of saying “thank you” to the brave souls who risked their lives to save him.
