Beckley was saved from the saddest fate by the caretakers of Liberia Chimpanzee Rescue & Protection (LCRP). A few months ago, he was found orphaned. He lost his parents because of the illicit and deadly wildlife trade and then he had to live without a friend.
But fortunately, all of that has changed now.
LCRP describes as “the first and only sanctuary in Liberia for all the chimpanzees in need” and it is the home and the safest heaven to more than 80 orphaned chimps. Almost all of them are rescued from heartbreaking circumstances in the West African nation.
Chimpanzees like Beckley need more than just dedicated care to grow and mature healthily. They also need others to truly thrive.
Recently after an assessment and observation period, Beckley was introduced into his new family in a protected patch of forest at LCRP. So that he and his new siblings can enjoy the lives that were taken from them. After a long period of sadness and trauma, their instinct is still to love. When Beckley arrived there, he was greeted by them with warm chimp hugs.
According to the LCRP, most of the rescued chimpanzees under their care were not able to return to a fully-wild life. But fortunately, chimps like Beckley can continue to live in a protected forest rather than being like lifelong victims of the illicit wildlife trade.
LCRP says further that Chimpanzees are not and should not be pets or forced to live with humans. The Chimpanzee orphans at LCRP sanctuary in West Africa are victims of the bush meat and illegal pet trade which is so cruel. Their mothers were killed tragically and they required care all the time. Thanks to the dedicated caregivers and the staff the orphans are being rehabilitated so that the chimps will be able to thrive with others in a safe environment whenever they grow older!
