The Morinville Veterinary Clinic in Alberta, Canada, recently addressed this common concern on their Facebook page, offering pet owners some much-needed reassurance. According to the clinic, these red spots are often nothing more than fly bites.
A Seasonal Occurrence
“We are getting more and more phone calls about red bites on dogs’ stomachs,” the clinic shared. “These are a type of fly bite, and dogs usually get them from lying in the grass. While they may look unpleasant, they typically don’t bother the dogs and heal quickly on their own without any treatment. These flies are usually around for a few weeks in the spring before disappearing.”
The clinic’s message quickly gained traction, with pet owners sharing their own experiences and expressing relief that they could avoid an unnecessary (and expensive) trip to the vet.
“Thank you for the information,” one Facebook user commented. “I was just about to rush my dog to the vet and spend $200 that I really don’t have.”
The Culprit: Black Flies
So what’s behind these mysterious red marks? Experts point to black flies, which are prevalent across North America, particularly in northern regions.
“These appear to be bites from black flies, which are widespread across North America, especially in northern latitudes,” explained Michael San Filippo, a spokesperson for the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA).
“While black fly bites on dogs are usually harmless, pet owners should still pay attention to any changes in their pet’s skin or behavior,” San Filippo added. “Other conditions can cause similar markings, and some may indicate a more serious issue.”
When to See a Vet
Although black fly bites are generally harmless, it’s important to stay vigilant. Similar-looking marks could result from other pests or allergic reactions. If your dog’s bites seem to worsen, cause discomfort, or are accompanied by other symptoms, it’s best to seek professional advice.
“If you notice any unusual bites, injuries, or behavioral changes, consult your veterinarian,” San Filippo advised. “Factors such as your pet’s age, medical history, and local environmental risks should always be considered.”
